SUMMER ON-Campus

 

1. Course Description: 3 credit hours

The course emphasizes the stages of the helping relationship. Students practice basic attending and communication skills, including questioning, reflection of feeling and meaning, summarization, focusing and self-disclosure. Students learn to help clients identify the problem that provides the focus for counseling. Students practice skills in role-played situations staged in class.

Students will decide % for each assessment within above limits.

  1. Research Requirements:Students will use research articles in a written case analysis.

10. Other Issues:

  1. Attendance: Students are expected to attend all classes.
  2. Plagiarism: Students found plagiarizing will receive a grade of O for that assignment.

Course Assignments

Exercises from Haney and Leibsohn: Students have a variety of ways to complete these exercises. The options include:

1.Students may watch the video tape and handwrite answers in the workbook and bring to class for grading.

2. Students may watch the video tape and type answers...please label each answer. Students can then bring the exercise to class for grading or may email as a word document to: etetlow@mo.freei.net

3.Students may use the CD-ROM to do the exercises. Students can then print out a copy of the answers and bring to class for feedback

4. Students may use the CD-ROM and email answers to: etetlow@mo.freei.net Please note that it is difficult to give feedback with this option.

Written Case Notes and Analysis

Each student will work with a client for at least 4 sessions. Students must complete an "informed consent" with the client, an intake and assessment session, 2 "50 minute" sessions and a termination session. The client may be a classmate, colleague, acquaintance, your client may not be a family member or close friend.

Students will submit:

The informed consent

The intake and assessment form

Summaries of 3 journal articles suggesting counseling issues and techniques with the identified client's problem.

Case notes and summaries for each session and each peer supervision presentation.

A Termination Plan

A Counseling Summary Analysis including the presenting problem, other issues, client's blind spots, action plan and analysis of counseling skills. Each component must be substantiated with client or counselor quotes.

Case Presentation:

Students will present their clients. Each presentation should be between 30 and 45 minutes. Case presentations should be augmented with video or audiotape of the client. The organization of the case presentation will be similar to the counseling summary analysis.
